One of the most successful initiatives developed by Bristol After Stroke is our “Peer Mentoring” service, which brings volunteers who have had a stroke together with people who are perhaps struggling to come to terms with their condition.

These “Peer Mentors” provide empathetic, one-to-one, person-centred support… helping their “mentees” to recognise and, where possible, overcome the barriers and obstacles they are encountering by sharing their own lived experiences as well as the coping strategies that worked for them.

Having a stroke can leave a person experiencing emotions of isolation and depressionrobbing them of their self-confidence and radically changing their relationships with those around them. Peer mentoring offers a unique and bespoke intervention to support people to become more aware of their capabilities and strengths, develop confidence and a greater sense of resilience and self-belief.

We currently have eight Peer Mentors, all of whom have been trained to perform their roles, and who receive professional guidance and supervision. Each of them has been providing amazing support to service users.

The results to date have been outstanding, leading to us recently winning an award from The National Lottery to train ten more mentors and help even more people on their stroke journey.

So would YOU like to harness the experiences you have had to make a positive impact on the lives of others?

If so, do please get in touch for an informal chat about what is involved, alternatively click on the link below for further information. The closing date for applications is the 8th November and training will take place during the last week in November/ 1st week in December.
